Construction Site Security Has An Alert Fatigue Problem

Construction teams are switching their security systems off because the alerts never stop. Tristan Thomas on why detection alone was never the point.

A conversation I had recently stuck with me. A customer described what it had been like managing security on a previous project — using a system that couldn't tell the difference between a real threat and normal site activity. Eventually they turned the alerts off completely.

Not because the system wasn't detecting things. It was detecting everything. That was the problem.

I've been thinking about that conversation since, because it's not an isolated experience. Alert fatigue on construction sites is more common than most people in this industry want to admit, and it points to a gap that goes deeper than any individual product or platform.

Construction Sites Aren't Static.

The standard approach is straightforward: detect motion, trigger an alarm, escalate to law enforcement. On a static perimeter, that logic works. A construction site is anything but static.

A superintendent swings by on a Sunday afternoon because he forgot something. Motion detected, alarm triggered, police potentially dispatched on a fully authorized visit. A fuel vendor arrives at 4am before the crew shows up. Overnight teams on a 24/7 build work in one concentrated area of the site while the rest sits quiet. In every one of these scenarios, a system that can only detect motion treats authorized activity the same as a genuine threat.

The result is predictable. Teams start adjusting alert thresholds to reduce the noise. Then they disable certain alert types entirely. Eventually someone makes the call to turn the whole thing off. A security system that's been switched off isn't managing risk. It's just hardware sitting on a construction site.

The Gap Isn't Detection.

The issue isn't that these systems aren't sensitive enough. It's that they don't understand what's happening on site well enough to know what actually matters.

This is where the combination of real-time location data, AI cameras, and a human review layer changes the equation.

Detection was never really the goal. Knowing what matters is.

If a camera picks someone up on site and their badge confirms they belong there, no alert needs to fire. Authorized personnel keep working without interruption. Truly unauthorized activity — someone on site with no badge, in an area they have no business being in, at a time when no one should be there — still gets immediate attention. The system isn't less sensitive. It's more intelligent about what sensitivity means in a construction environment.

The JSOC adds another layer that matters just as much. Before law enforcement is ever contacted, the event gets reviewed by people who understand construction operations. They know the difference between a scheduled fuel delivery arriving before dawn and a pickup truck loading stolen copper into the bed. That judgment call comes from people with the right context, operating around the clock, with the ability to act.

The Stakes Are Higher on a 24/7 Build

On a standard construction site, turned-off alerts are a security gap. On a mission-critical data center build running 24/7 with multiple trade partners, aggressive timelines, and sophisticated owners watching every milestone, it's a different kind of problem entirely.

These sites don't stop. Overnight operations are smaller in scale and concentrated in specific zones, but the risk profile doesn't shrink with the headcount. Unauthorized after-hours activity on a data center site isn't just a theft risk — it's a project risk. The owners who commission these builds have requirements that go well beyond a gate and a guard, and the GCs who serve them need systems that can hold up across the full operating tempo of the project.

A security system that works on Tuesday morning needs to work the same way at 3am on Sunday. If it can't make that distinction without drowning the team in false alarms, it won't be switched on when it matters most.

This Isn't an Isolated Problem

How many construction sites right now have security systems that are partially or completely disabled because the volume of nuisance alerts made them impractical to use?

My guess is more than anyone would be comfortable saying out loud.

The technology to solve this exists. Connecting real-time location data with AI camera intelligence and a human review layer that understands construction operations isn't a future capability — it's what operationally intelligent security looks like today. The construction sites that build toward that standard aren't just reducing false alarms. They're building a system that actually stays on.
